Join the Choir

Founded in 1970 by Dr John Coope MBE, the Byrds set a standard for the relatively new phenomenon of semi-professional chamber choirs bringing cathedral-choir quality to the concert platform and reviving glorious renaissance pieces as well as giving premieres of newly-commissioned contemporary works. Scroll down to see previous concert programme flyers.

Our first conductor was Stephen Wilkinson MBE who retired in 2009 to concentrate on composing and arranging. Our current conductor, Keith Orrell, has a very individual choral personality which has inspired other national symphony choruses, chamber, cathedral, youth and children's choirs. He is also an ex-Byrd!

We take pride in the quality and range of our programmes, seeking the hidden depths of every piece of music. We embrace the many musical challenges which our repertoire presents, persistently studying it even when some pieces initially feel intractable. You can read the latest MD report (2019/20) here, and get a feel for our programmes in the flyers below. We work as a team, supporting and encouraging each other, with a professionalism that belies our amateur status.

We usually rehearse in the excellent hall of Sale United Reformed Church in Montague Road, Sale, M33 3BU (map), on Sundays from 2.15-5.15. It’s close to Sale Metrolink station, and there is good parking. Rehearsals run from September to May, with breaks around Christmas and Easter. Do consider joining us.
